The Short’s to Short’s Paddle is an annual point-to-point paddle event that spans Antrim County’s entire lower chain of lakes. The event is open to all who possess the skills and perseverance to attempt it. Taking place near the day of Short’s Brewing Company’s annual anniversary, the event began as an informal meeting of co-workers to celebrate another year of making beer in pristine Northern Michigan. Today, the mantra Per Unda Por Zythum (By Water for Beer) remains as strong as ever, yet the mission has expanded to include raising awareness and funds to protect the waters and resources of our region and those who work to protect them.
The 2014 event will take place on Saturday, May 17th. In the past, the event took place on the last Friday in April. By pushing the event back a few weeks, we should have warmer temperatures and warmer water. However, the lakes will still be relatively free of boat traffic, docks, and other obstructions.
We are upgrading the launch site by carpeting the ramp. This will allow paddlers with delicate crafts to slide into the water. By staging paddlers on the carpet, we should be able to move launch along more quickly. You will not be allowed to launch if you are not wearing your PFD, are visibly intoxicated, or have alcohol in your boat.
Registration takes place through this website from January through April 30th. Additional registrations are not be allowed. There will be no on-site or event day registration. However, no registration is necessary for the FREE Short’s Summer Kickoff Party from 4-10 pm on May 17th at the Short’s production brewery in Elk Rapids.
We continue to make safety our main concern. This year, we will have an even larger safety boat presence, better land support, and better communication. Kayaks with spray skirts and a hull length greater than 10 feet are required. In other words, only touring and sea kayaks. No canoes, sailboats, rowboats, or river kayaks will be allowed.
We are charging participants a fee to cover our costs. All remaining proceeds will be donated to the non-profit groups that devote their time to care for the lakes and natural areas that the Short’s to Short’s Paddle traverses. Learn more about the Three Lakes Association or the Elk-Skegemog Lakes Association.
Livery shuttle services are being provided by Shel-Haven Canoe Rentals of Grayling, Michigan. For convenience, you may register for livery services in advance or the day of the event at check in. Livery fees will be $20 per person, plus an additional $15 for your boat and gear. Shel-haven will also provide the option to provide kayakers shuttle service on Friday night. You may add on these services up until April 30 by logging into your account. We will be in contact with more information soon.
